Whether you’re training through an injury or taking time off to recover, recovery is each athletes own responsibility. Performing cryotherapy, stretching, strengthening, and cross training on a daily basis to address limitations is necessary. Appropriate exercises/stretches will quickly return athletes to the pool and competition. The longer an athlete is out of the water, they are less likely to return to high level competition. Also, remember that working out at a high level requires regular stretching and use of ice even when injury isn’t present. Proactively taking care of your back and shoulders will prevent injury particularly for an athlete with reoccurring tendonitis. Soreness and fatigue are completely normal with high level training. So, take time to care for your tired and sore muscles before you have an injury and if you are injured, take care of the injury properly and promptly.
